Melamine is a chemical used in the manufacturing of plastics, flame retardants, and other products. It is not approved by the FDA for use in any food or animal feed. However, due to its high nitrogen content it has been used as a protein substitute by food and ingredient manufacturers. Melamine has been found in milk and milk-based products, produce, pet food and eggs. Ingestion of melamine and cyanuric acid (a degradation product o melamine), can lead to the formation of kidney stones, renal failure and death.
